Some common mistakes to avoid with social media marketing for smaller businesses

Social media is here to stay, ignore anyone that tries to tell you otherwise. This means that it's so important to hone in on your skills and perfect them as much as possible. Practice really does make perfect.

The first and most common mistake to avoid is having a lack of patience. You can look at the huge companies who have millions of followers on Twitter and Instagram and think that it's going to happen straight away but it's important to realise they have all of these followers for a reason, they're multi-national companies who make an absurd amount of money. This is not you. Not yet anyway.

Not taking it seriously is a big old pet peeve of mine. Yes, a lot of people use social media. Similarly, a lot of people use a calculator. Does this mean you'd let them do your accounting for you? (Analogy stolen from another source) I'm not saying its rocket science, it isn't, but you must make sure the person in charge of your social media accounts has an idea of what to do before you let them loose with the general public. This being said you can always teach yourself how to do it, just ensure you're doing it properly.

Be consistent. Make sure you keep the social media up to date with frequent and relevant posts. Not only does this give your audience some content to feed off but if you link it to your website by way of a news story it will keep your SEO high. Win win really. If you don't then you run the risk of some of your audience thinking you have gone dormant and maybe even closed down.

Have a sense of humour. Nobody will want to follow you if they don't think your content is interesting. A lot of the time businesses are talking about topics that may be interesting to them and their audience, but not to everyone else. Humour is a great way to involve more people. A great example of humour in social media marketing is the betting giant, Paddy Power. They clearly have a large team dedicated to their social media. Obviously this is a resource not available to everyone but it's easy to take some pointers from them.
