Hundreds of thousands British people affected by a huge hack, make sure it isn't you!

It always surprises me when I see that a huge company has had a security breach on a massive scale. Especially when the company had been warned about previously. Obviously hackers are trying to get into companies all the time, but there really shouldn't be any excuse for compromising the personal data of customers.

Equifax is a company that gathers the information of around 800 million individual consumers and 88 million businesses world wide. The company estimates around 400,000 Britons will be affected by the breach. (This may still rise).

It isn't too clear what exactly happened but what we do know is that the hackers took advantage of some out of date software. This is what the company was warned about before. Another issue was that the CEO didn't find out about it until two days later.

The attack actually happened last month, and cost the CEO his job. However the company recently announced the numbers have risen since the initial announcement. As the company were told about their short comings in terms of data protections a few months previous, they are likely to not be GDPR compliant. This means that had the company suffered this attack in May or after of next year, not only would their brand image have been damaged but Equifax would have been fined millions.

If you are or you know someone who may have been affected by this hack then do let them know.

Similarly, if you are currently not GDPR compliant, you NEED to be by May of next year. If you're not then you WILL face massive massive fines. Call us now on 01759 303007 and we promise to help you out.
