How important is SEO?

The simple answer to that is very important!

If you have a website then it is imperative that you get the most out of it. Why? Because you don't want it to be a waste of money.

How do I implement SEO?

Have clear page titles with no repeating words. If a word is repeated in a title then the search engine will look at it and demote the site down the rankings.

Create Meta Tags/Keywords and Description. The description is a short snippet that summarises the page, about the same length as a tweet. Keywords are a few words that hold a relevance to the page. For example, the Keywords for this article include SEO, Search Engine Optimisation, News, WDY.

Come up with a longer list of potential key words and then narrow it down afterwards. If a web page does not have keywords then it makes it more difficult for people to find it and the search engine will demote it down the rankings.

Use analytics to their full potential. Analyitics are one of the most valuable tools to any website owner. From here you can see key statistics including the visitor rate, the bounce rate, e-commerce tracking and how long people stay on the site. Using analytics means you can stamp out errors and things that are not working as well as they should and replace them with techniques that will. Failure to do this will mean that the search engine will demote it down the rankings. Can you see a pattern emerging?

Update your site regularly. The easiest of all the points on this list. Keep the website fresh and active by updating it as much as you can. This could be uploading photos or writing a blog once a week. If the website is not updated then the search engine will look at it and think that its not in use, and why should a dormant website have a high ranking? Well guess what would happen next, yes its goodbye to the high ranking and hello to page 2 and beyond on Google.
